Dhaka, Bangladesh (October 23): Torrential rain has forced the postponement of this week’s Faldo Series Bangladesh Championship.
With the Kurmitola Golf Club under water after three days of non-stop rain, tournament organisers had no option but to call off the 54-hole event that was scheduled to tee-off tomorrow.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Abdul Bari (Retired), Co-ordinator at the Bangladesh Golf Federation, said: “Due to heavy rain, the course at Kurmitola Golf Club has been inundated very badly.”
With many fairways and greens submerged, it’s likely to be several weeks at least until the course has dried out and is playable.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, the Met Office recorded 50 mm of rainfall in the capital within a 24-hour period. Flooding was reported in numerous districts.
So severe were conditions across Dhaka that the Fire Service operated rafts for commuters at various badly-hit spots.
Founded in the 1950s, the Kurmitola Golf Club moved to its present location in the heart of the capital during the 1960s. It’s the best-known course in Bangladesh.
Age group winners from the Faldo Series Bangladesh Championship will earn themselves tickets to the 12th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, in March, 2018.
The 2017-18 Faldo Series Asia season is supported by The R&A and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation. The International Junior Golf Academy is a partner of the Faldo Series.
As well as two events in China, India and Thailand, championships are being staged in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.
Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006.
Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching more than 7,000 golfers each year. Past champions include Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, both multiple Major winners.
